Gallery House, West Perth
Dar Studio are working with Ferguson Architects to assist with clearance of heritage related planning conditions for a new residential development at 31 Malcolm Street, West Perth, also known as Edith Cowan House & Skinner Gallery (fmr). Our role involves resolving the detail interface between new and existing fabric, preparation of an Interpretation Strategy and finalisation of a Heritage Agreement to include a scope of conservation works.
The new development named ‘Gallery House’ to reflect the site’s history, is to create a contemporary residential complex consisting of a new 13-level tower with retention of portion of Edith Cowan’s House (built 1893) and complete removal of the former Skinner Gallery (built 1958). Due to the level of proposed changes, Dar Studio have prepared a comprehensive Interpretation Strategy that interprets the rich history of the heritage buildings, uses and associations with the place. It provides a better understanding of the place in its wider context and to enrich the visitor and user experience.
Interesting fact: The place offers glimpses into the stories of prominent West Australians and the social, political and artistic development they led in the State’s development. Edith Cowan lived at the property intermittently between 1893 and 1919, with the house subsequently named after her. The place also has a close association with Rose and Josiah Skinner who were leaders in encouraging and promoting modern Australian art in the late 1950s and 1960s.
